Upcoming canvass dates are Sundays August 22 and August 29. 2:00 pm training for a 2:30 canvass.

Meet at Democratic HQ, 529 Main Street.

Come with a friend or be placed in a team at the training.

New volunteers will be paired with experienced canvassers.

Friendly door knocks only to Obama supporters.

We are asking first time ’08 voters to pledge to vote again in ’10 and introducing them to the local and state-wide Democratic candidates.

Food Finders Mobile Pantry

Food Finders Food Bank seeks volunteers from YWCT to assist with the rollout of its first Mobile Food Pantry event in downtown Lafayette, to be held at Riehle Plaza from 11:00am-2:00pm on Sept. 9 (volunteers are asked to arrive by 10:30am to help with pantry set-up and learn how to assist clients as they select their products). Mobile food pantries comprise an outreach program of Food Finders that provides a variety of fresh and processed food products directly to underserved communities throughout North Central Indiana through the sponsorship of local businesses, faith communities, and social service agencies. A distinctive feature of mobile pantries is their emphasis on client choice, meaning that individuals and families in need don’t merely receive a pre-selected quantity of foodstuffs but instead are afforded the dignity of selecting for themselves from a variety of products in categories ranging from meat, fish, and fresh produce to baked goods, cereals, staples, condiments, canned goods, and frozen prepared meals, arrayed on tables at the pantry site. Volunteers typically are needed to assist clients with their shopping, restock products, and help with client registration, along with set-up and tear-down/cleanup.

When: 7 p.m. Monday, September 13

What: Acquire letter writing tips and talking points; discuss issues;
walk through the letter writing process; and, as a group, craft a letter.

Collecting plastic bottles for Food Finders

Food Finders is making laundry soap–an expensive and necessary household item–and bottling it in recycled plastic bottles for distribution through the mobile food pantries. You can drop off used bottles WITH LIDS at Food FInders, 50 Olympia Court,at the Church of the Good Shepherd, 610 Meridian St. WL, or at the WL farmer’s markets, Wednesday afternoons.

Kickoff Canvasses

YWCT is kicking off the campaign season with two canvasses, Sunday June 27 and Wednesday June 30. We hope that everyone who was so great in ’08 is getting ready to knock doors again in ’10! These first canvasses are being designed to be fun and easy. Fun? Yes! We will go out in groups, and get together afterwards to unwind and share stories. Easy? Yes! There will be training beforehand, PLUS, we will be knocking only on doors of folks who voted for Obama in ’08 and are still enthusiastic supporters. Our goal is simply to tell them the importance of voting in ’10 and inform them about candidates.

We will meet at Democratic HQ, 529 Main Street. Come with a friend or be placed in a team at the training.
